Affiliate and referral disclosure: This guide includes Ashley’s Braintrust referral link and an Upwork affiliate link for hiring. Qualifying activity may earn a commission or referral reward. A profile, application, or referral link does not guarantee work.
You have a skill and a possible service. The next task is to make your experience easy for a potential client to understand. Choose relevant opportunities, show proof, explain how you will handle the work, and agree on a manageable first project.
This workflow brings together two routes: Upwork’s freelance marketplace and Braintrust’s talent network. You can explore either without making your whole business depend on one platform.
Choose a platform based on the work you want
| Your immediate goal | Route to explore | What to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Respond to a client brief for a defined project | Upwork | A focused profile, relevant sample, and specific proposal |
| Explore contract or full-time roles in your specialty | Braintrust | A complete professional profile and readiness for screening |
| Test a service with someone who already knows your work | Your existing network | A short offer, clear scope, and a paid pilot |
This is a practical selection guide, not a ranking of hiring odds. Look at the actual opportunities, requirements, and costs available to you.
What is Braintrust, and how does it work?
Braintrust connects companies with professionals for contract and full-time opportunities. Its listed fields include engineering, design, product, marketing, operations, and AI training. The talent process describes a profile, an AI skills interview, certification, and matching. Braintrust advertises no platform fees for talent. Review its official talent guide and role categories.
Make your specialty, availability, and examples clear. Read each opportunity’s requirements before investing time. Screening or a match does not establish that a client will hire you.

How to approach Upwork
Upwork connects clients and independent professionals through its Talent Marketplace and defined services in Project Catalog. For finding work, start with a clear profile and select briefs that match what you can deliver. Read Upwork’s freelancer introduction.
Research checked November 3, 2026: standard freelancer service fees range from 0% to 15% per contract, and purchased Connects cost $0.15 each. Check the percentage and proposal requirements shown for the specific job. Set a small application budget and include prospecting time when assessing your results.
Build a profile around a client problem
Give the reader three things: the work you do, a situation you understand, and evidence that supports your offer.
Example profile opening“I help small service businesses improve the journey from inquiry to booking. I review the page, form, and follow-up process, identify a priority issue, and implement an agreed improvement.”
Adapt this to work you can actually do. Add relevant experience and explain your contribution. Use a truthful responsibilities-based title, and avoid claiming results you have not measured.
Prepare one useful portfolio example
- Show the problem: what was confusing, incomplete, or time-consuming?
- Show your decisions: what did you change, and why?
- Show the deliverable: a page, document, workflow, or walkthrough.
- State the evidence: distinguish measured results from a proposal or hypothesis.
A demonstration for a fictional business is fine when clearly labeled. Get permission before sharing client material.
Check an opportunity before writing a proposal
- Can you explain the requested result in one sentence?
- Do you have the skills and available time to deliver it?
- Does the budget leave room for communication, revisions, and platform costs?
- What access or information would you need from the client?
- Is the work described clearly enough to estimate, or is paid discovery a better first step?
If key details are missing, ask focused questions. Avoid turning every application into hours of unpaid production work.
Use AI to review your proposal, then make it your own
Use an approved, nonconfidential brief and your real experience. Ask AI to help you identify gaps before polishing the wording.
Review this client brief and my actual experience. 1. Identify the requested deliverable and missing information. 2. Identify relevant evidence in my experience. 3. Flag any claim I cannot support. 4. Draft a short proposal with a practical first step. 5. End with one question that materially affects scope. Do not invent clients, skills, metrics, or availability.
Read the result carefully. Remove generic praise and unsupported claims. Explain what you will do, how the client can assess it, and what you need to know before confirming the scope.

Agree on delivery before starting
A good first project has a boundary. Record the deliverables, exclusions, timeline, client inputs, revision allowance, and payment milestones. Agree on how you will handle a change in scope.
Review one page and its form, document the priority issue, implement one approved change, test the submission path with authorized test data, and provide a short handoff. A full website redesign, new CRM, or ongoing campaign is a separate scope.
If AI supports delivery, use client data only in approved tools, review its output, and test the final result yourself. For an automation, include monitoring instructions and a fallback. The scope and revisions guide can help you document those expectations.
Review the first week without turning it into a verdict
| Record | What it helps you understand |
|---|---|
| Relevant opportunities found | Whether your service and search criteria match available work |
| Applications and time spent | Whether your approach is manageable |
| Connects or other application costs | The cost of exploring that channel |
| Replies and useful conversations | Whether your offer and evidence are connecting |
| Paid projects and total delivery hours | What remains after fees, costs, and the time involved |
Choose one improvement based on what happened: narrow the service, strengthen a sample, ask a clearer question, or try a different source of clients. A small number of applications cannot tell you everything about your ability.
