AI can help you deliver client work, and your expertise may also help improve AI systems. Compare the two paths, understand Mercor's application process, and build a realistic plan for remote freelance work.

Build a portfolio of ways to find work

Direct clients, freelance marketplaces, and expert project platforms each require different preparation. A direct client needs to understand your offer and trust your delivery. A project platform needs evidence that your skills match a specific assignment. Keep your core professional story consistent, but adapt the proof to the opportunity rather than sending the same generic pitch everywhere.

What Mercor does

Mercor connects professionals with AI training and evaluation projects. Expertise is central: work can involve judging responses or developing examples. Opportunities are selective; read each listing. Mercor’s expert overview explains the model.

Freelancing with AI versus working on AI

For your own freelance service, a client buys a deliverable you agree to produce. You may use approved AI tools for preparation, drafting, or organization while remaining responsible for quality. For AI evaluation work, your own judgment may be the deliverable. Do not assume permission to automate it. Choose work you understand well enough to review and explain.

How to get started, step by step

  1. Open Ashley’s referral link. Review the opportunities and choose a genuinely relevant role.
  2. Create or update your profile. Prepare an accurate resume and clear examples of your expertise.
  3. Read the complete listing. Check location eligibility, qualifications, workload, equipment, and compensation terms.
  4. Complete the required steps. Follow the role’s assessment and interview instructions; requirements vary.
  5. Submit and check confirmation. Use your Mercor dashboard to see what is complete and what remains pending.
  6. Review an offer before accepting. Understand the contract, payment arrangements, and onboarding requirements.

Use Mercor’s application guide, profile guide, and assessment guide for the current screens and instructions.

Protect time for delivery and finding the next client

Map a week with separate blocks for applications, client delivery, administration, and learning. Leave room for corrections and communication. Before accepting another project, compare its actual workload with commitments you already have. Build a small reusable proof folder containing your resume, a permissioned work sample, two decision stories, and your availability. Update it as your experience changes, without uploading confidential client material.

Prepare for an AI interview without outsourcing your answers

Practice explaining a real decision in your own words: the situation, your contribution, the tradeoff, and the outcome. Test your camera and microphone, choose a quiet space, and allow time to read the instructions. Mercor provides a practice interview. Treat screening as a demonstration of your own expertise.

Use AI for preparation on public or invented material—for example, organizing a list of skills you want to review. Keep confidential work out of external tools. During assessments and project work, follow the applicable rules. Mercor’s LLM policy limits AI assistance and prohibits outsourcing specified reasoning and evaluation tasks.

Make remote work fit your actual week

Before agreeing to work, ask what completion looks like, how quality is reviewed, which hours or deliverables are paid, and what happens when a project pauses. Check the current contract terms, payment guidance, and supported countries. A headline rate cannot tell you how much work you will receive.

For any freelance arrangement, plan for preparation, communication, revisions, and administration as well as delivery. Keep a record of agreed scope and approved work. Maintain other ways to find opportunities so that one application or one project does not carry your entire plan.

Your next 30 minutes

Create your proof folder, then compare one client-service opportunity and one expert-project listing against your skills and schedule.

Then take one concrete step: inspect a matching listing, improve one weak example, or prepare for a practice interview. If there is no suitable opportunity today, keep the useful evidence and return when a better match appears.
