Find clients

A promising freelance lead still deserves a careful check.

Spot unclear scope, unpaid tests, suspicious payment requests, and pressure to skip the normal process.

THE PRACTICAL ANSWER

What warning signs should I check in a freelance lead?

Look for unclear deliverables, pressure to act before basic questions are answered, requests for substantial unpaid work, suspicious payment arrangements, and unnecessary access or personal-data requests. Verify the client and the process independently, then decide whether to clarify, reduce the commitment, or decline.

Urgency is not evidence of legitimacy

A lead can sound exciting and still require verification. Slow down when someone offers unusually high pay for vague work, wants you to buy equipment through a specified seller, or asks you to send money to unlock a job. A polished profile, recognizable company name, or long email signature does not prove who is on the other end.

Upwork's safety guidance flags pressure to communicate off-platform before a contract, requests for free work, and off-platform payment arrangements. Use the platform's current rules and reporting channels. Payment protection has eligibility conditions; it is not a blanket guarantee for every project.

Check identity through a separate route

If someone claims to represent an organization, verify the organization and the contact through a channel you independently locate. Do not rely only on the links or phone number in an unexpected message. Avoid sharing identity documents, financial details, or credentials in a prospect conversation; legitimate verification should happen through the appropriate official process.

Distinguish a sample from unpaid client work

A portfolio sample demonstrates past or self-directed work. A custom “test” that produces usable business work can become an unpaid project. Offer an existing relevant example or a small paid pilot through an appropriate agreement. If a platform prohibits the request, follow its reporting guidance.

Read the project as carefully as the person

An honest client can still have an unsuitable project. Look for missing inputs, no clear approver, an unrealistic deadline, or a budget that assumes unlimited revisions. These issues may be clarified rather than reported. Write the questions down and decide what must be resolved before you commit.

Use three possible decisions

  • Proceed: the work fits and required checks and terms are in place.
  • Clarify: legitimate questions remain about scope, timing, access, or payment.
  • Decline or report: the request is suspicious, prohibited, or outside your boundaries.

Do not upload suspicious attachments to an AI assistant or let an automated workflow act on them. If you already shared credentials, change them through the official service and review access. Preserve relevant messages and contact the platform or service through its verified support route.

Make caution part of your process

Keep a simple checklist beside your proposal workflow. The purpose is to catch important unknowns while you can still choose. No score can certify a stranger or guarantee payment.

Run the opportunity check and define a smaller paid first engagement.
